Mayra Estella Lopez’s body was found burning in a trash bin in Northglenn on August 26,1992. The 12 year old girl had been raped and strangled. Thirteen months later, anAdams County grand jury indicted 17 year old James Richard Bastin on charges of murder, murderafter deliberation and sexual assault on a child. The arrest of the Horizon High Schooljunior came one year after police had interviewed him, along with dozens of other teenagers fromthe area. Gary Cohen, a Smithtown pediatrician, was convicted of 28 counts of sexual abuse and sodomy involving four children. Cohen collapsed into sobs as he heard the verdict. After nearly a month-long trial, which six boys testified they had been sexually abused, the jurors also acquitted Cohen of 35 charges, an action that the prosecution said showed the jury had been thorough in its efforts. Cohen has been free on bail since his indictment and faced 63 counts of sexual abuse, sodomy and endangering the welfare of a child involving incidents

Authorities would like to speak with anyone who may have information concerningthe murder or abduction victims, Charles and Jennifer Chia, at or near the Timber Hills apartmentcomplex in Southwest Reno, Nevada on October 18, 1989. At approximately 3:20 pm on October18th, Charles, 8, and Jennifer, 6, exited their school bus near their residence. Tracy’s mother dropped her first grader off at Bertha Heid Elementary School inThornton. But school officials reported that Tracy never attended school that day. Herbody was found around 5 pm about 30 feet from a road off Boulder County 119. Next to Tracy’sbody were her school supplies. Her mother didn’t realize her daughter hadn’t made it into theschool building until she went to pick up Tracy from school. Authorities ruled that the girldied between 10 am and noon. The official cause of death was asphyxiation.

A Superior Court judge today acquitted four Passaic youths of charges ofjuvenile delinquency stemming from a reported sexual assault of a 12 year old girl lastmonth. The judge ruled there were inconsistencies in the testimony of the girl and otherwitnesses.

Steven Wicks, 10, and Ronald DeFond, 7, left Ronald’s home around 2:30 on March 8, 1980, towalk about a block for ice cream at a grocery store on East Colfax Avenue and Williams Street inDenver. A passer-by driving in Adams County found the bodies of the boys were kidnapped andmurdered. Each had been shot once in the head and both boys later died at Denver HealthMedical Center. Sheriff’s investigators say their prime suspect in the case died severalyears ago, however, the case has not been officially closed.
