After many towns, including most recently Algoma, Wisconsin, passed laws barring sex offenders from moving within 2,000 feet of a church, school playground, day care or walking trail, some states are trying to craft their own solutions to the problem that has no prison sentence.  New York is proposing to keep some sex offenders in civil confinement, that is, locked up beyond their prison sentences in psychiatric hospitals.  New York is joining more than a dozen states which allow targeted sex offenders to be held beyond their prison terms.  A

Rep. Anthony Weiner unveiled a series of proposals yesterday to improve monitoring of sex offenders, including expanded access for parents to databases of perverts’ addresses.

Nassau County Legis. Craig Johnson on Friday called for state lawmakers to pass a bill cracking down of sex offenders.  Johnson appeared on the steps of the Nassau County Courthouse with the Senate’s deputy minority leader and said Assembly and Senate leaders should reconcile competing civil confinement bills that have languished in Albany for several years.  Both bills passed unanimously last month.  The bills differ on how to treat sex offenders after their release from prison.

Governor Pataki went to war with Assemblyman Sheldon Silver yesterday after lawmakers failed to pass a proposal by the governor to keep the state’s most dangerous sex offenders locked up in psychiatric centers after their release from prison.  If a recently freed rapist strikes again, Pataki wants to make one thing clear: It’s going to be Sheldon Silver’s fault.
