Federal immigration officers and Nassau police fanned out across Nassau County yesterday starting at 5 a.m., rousting sex offenders out of their sleep, apprehending others on the streets and arresting some as they showed up for appointments with probation officers.  Twenty-five were rounded up in yesterday’s sweep.  They were taken to a federal detention facility.  Agents had also arrested 16 immigrants in Nassau over the past few months.  Yesterday’s raids were the third time federal agents and local officers joined forces in Nassau to arrest immigrants who should have begun

Roger Paul Bentley, a 37 year old registered sex offender accused in the abduction and slaying of 10 year old Jetseta Gage, was charged yesterday with first degree murder and kidnapping.  Bentley is accused of taking Jetseta from her home in Cedar Rapids on March 24.  Her 7 year old brother saw her get into a truck with him.  Evidence suggests that she was sexually abused.  If convicted, he faces life in prison.  Bail was set a $1 million on each count.

After conducting a local sweep of registered sex offenders on March 2, federal Immigration andCustoms Enforcement agents in collaboration with Suffolk police officials arrested 28 residing inthe county illegally. Those targeted during the sweep had prior convictions of rape, sexual abuse,sexual misconduct and forcible touching, according to ICE.
