Carol Howell Clarke, a 45 year old day care worker, was arrested for sexually abusing a childyesterday after a Long Island couple showed cops nanny cam footage of her fondling their toddler.Clarke was arraigned on felony sex abuse charges. She is a licensed day care provider and wasworking at NaNa’s TLC day care center in Hempstead.

The recent suspension of a Westbury day care center over its employment of 51 year old Emmett Charles, a convicted sex offender, highlights the question of how long such offenders can be restricted from working in jobs where there are children. According to authorities, Charles, employed as a handyman at Play Play Play before its license was suspended by the state this month, committed no crime in taking a job where he had contact with youngsters. Instead, they say, it fell to the center’s employer to screen employees.

Gerald Amirault, a 50 year old Massachusetts man convicted of raping eight youngsters in one ofthe nation’s most lurid and bitterly disputed child molestation cases, has been freed on parole, 18years after he was convicted. He was found guilty in 1986 of abusing children at his family’ssuburban day-care center in Malden, Mass., and was sentenced to 30 to 40 years in prison. Hismother and sister were convicted in a separate trial. The Amirault’s argued that they were victimsof sex abuse hysteria that swept the country in the 1980s.

LaDonna Tucker, a 40-year-old woman who operates a day care center out of her home, was accusedof molesting little children in her care and offering them to her boyfriend sexually for $200. Shewas arrested after the boyfriend tipped police and let officers tape his phone conversations withher. According to court papers, she talked about performing oral sex on both male and femalechildren. Kenneth Wolfe, a 36 year old man who on paper and in person seemed like the ideal child-care worker, was caught by a Koalaty Time employee in a restroom taking a Polaroid picture of a 3 year old girl with her pants down.  He was arrested on two counts of lascivious acts with a child and one count of indecent contact with a child.  In an instant, he metamorphosed from a trusted colleague to someone accused of being a parent’s worst nightmare, a person who finds children sexually attractive.  When
