Former Riverhead High School principal Charles Regan has tendered his resignation to the Riverhead Central School District, effective Sept. 27.

Regan’s resignation is listed on the agenda for tomorrow night’s meeting of the board of education.

Regan, who was administratively assigned to his home on April 30, following accusations of sexual abuse by a female high school student, is currently facing disciplinary charges stemming from the student’s complaint. David Ellis Edwards, a 49 year old former Douglas Byrd Middle School principal in NorthCarolina, is accused of sexually assaulting a student while the boy’s unsuspecting parent wasoutside the room.  He was arrested and charged with second degree forcible sex offense, sexualacts with a student, taking indecent liberties with a minor and crimes against nature. Between 2009 and 2011, Edwards molested at least three boys between the ages of 11 and 14.

Norma Giannini, a 79 year old Roman Catholic nun, pleaded no contest yesterday to two counts of indecent behavior with a child for alleged sexual encounters with two male students at a church convent and school where she was principal during the 1960s.  She faces a maximum 10 years on each count when sentenced February 1.
