Two weeks after implementing a mapping system to track sex offenders, Town of Babylon officials said yesterday they had identified seven offenders living too close to places where children congregate and 17 in illegal housing.  The seven were told to leave their residences by the town’s Quality of Life Task Force because they were violating a county residency restriction law.  The law, passed in June, prohibits registered sex offenders from living within a quarter-mile of schools, parks, playgrounds or licensed child care centers.  One offender evicted was Clarence Carter, a

Lawmakers across Long Island are responding to heightened community concerns about sex offenders by proposing legislation that would more strictly govern where they live and how they are monitored.  In Suffolk, county legislators are considering four proposals that would increase restrictions on offenders and the landlords who house them and notify victims when an offender violates probation.  In Nassau, Long Beach and East Rockaway have moved to tighten prohibitions on where sex offenders reside.  East Rockaway voted to prohibit offenders from living within 1,000 feet of areas where children congregate.

After an audit that said sex offenders wearing global positioning system devices were not monitored at all times by Nassau probation officials, a $500,000 state grant will help them with more technology and staffing to monitor high-risk offenders 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  The grant will help the county to computerize law enforcement databases by next year.  As part of the program, other high-risk violent offenders could be subjected to satellite tracking.  The grant also allows the county to expand its use of polygraph tests on sex

About 650 sexual predators on parole in the Big apple will be placed under surveillance onHalloween to make certain they are at home and away from trick-or-treaters. Paroled pedophiles,rapists and molesters will also have their DVD movies checked during surprise visits next Tuesdayto determine if they are secretly hiding X-rated flicks or other prohibited porno materials. Dangerous, convicted sex offenders in Nassau County, including child molesters, are being monitored only during business hours, not at night, or on weekends and holidays.  It was discovered that sex offenders wearing court-ordered ankle bracelets are not being monitored around the clock.
