Federal funding for a Long Island-based computer mapping and e-mail alert system will provide people nationwide with updates when a registered sex offender moves into their neighborhood, a New York congressional delegation is set to announce today.  Parents for Megan’s Law, the Stony Brook-based nonprofit advocacy group, will get a $593,000 grant to build an e-mail alert system that allows users to receive alerts when a sex offender moves into a specific zip code.  The federal money will also be used to expand the National Megan’s law Helpline, which is

State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli released an audit yesterday of the state sex offender registry that, while generally positive, found significant flaws with its administration.  According to the findings, one-fourth of the records investigators surveyed had mismatched  driver’s license information and, in some cases, license details for the wrong people were given out as those of offenders.  Auditors randomly sampled license data for 200 of the state’s 23,000 registered sex offenders, and found a quarter of the records did not match.  Advocates for victims of sexual abuse welcomed the audit findings.

A proposed Nassau County law would require convicted sex offenders to submit to cyber-monitoring of their online activities as a condition of probation.  Nassau County Legislator David Mejias (D-North Massapequa) said yesterday that he would introduce the legislation Monday, and that it would apply to all sexual offenders.  Laura Ahearn, executive director of Parents for Megan’s Law, also attended the news conference and said sexual predators trolling for young victims on the Internet have moved beyond social networking sites used by children.  Now they’re doing something else, which is even

New guidelines and procedures announced by Governor Eliot Spitzer and legislative leaders on Thursday for confining sex offenders who have completed prison sentences go well beyond detaining the most violent predators.  The law, which would be one of the most far-reaching of its kind in the country, would also provide mental health treatment to inmates while they are jailed or confined and impose supervision and treatment after their release.

Ohio already tags repeat drunken drivers’ cars with bright yellow license plates, now it wants to make convicted sexual predators use fluorescent green ones.  A bill introduced Wednesday would require all habitual and child-oriented convicted sex offenders to display the easy to spot plates.  The bill is the latest in a series of Ohio measures to crack down on sex crimes.  Among them: tougher minimum sentences for rapists of children under 13; increased penalties for public indecency involving victims under 13; and mandatory tracking devices after those classified as sexually

Suffolk County has begun a plan to put up some offenders temporarily in trailers that will be shuttled around nonresidential neighborhoods at a county-paid cost of $85 per person a night.  Under the new policy, which started last week, up to eight registered offenders will be housed in each of the trailers, which will be placed at undisclosed locations and rotated throughout Suffolk.  Offenders will have an 8 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. curfew while being monitored by two security guards during that time.  In the morning, offenders will be bused
