CLICK OF A MOUSE WILL DEPLAY FULL LIST OF SEX OFFENDERS

With a few clicks of the mouse, anyone can learn whether a sex offender has moved into the neighborhood instead of having to visit their police station, dial a 900 number armed with detailed information about a suspected pedophile or wait for their school district to send them a letter.  A Long Island based parents' group has set up it's own Web site listing 262 convicted and released sex offenders from across the state.  Only high-risk offenders who committed their crimes after the law took effect in January 1996 are listed.  The Web site lists the persons name, address, birth date, physical description, license plate number, the victim's age, the criminal charges, the sentence imposed and some details about the crime.  Photos are shown only for those from Suffolk County, where the county executive authorized their use.  The site provides a lengthy primer on Megan's Law, including a warning that most sex offenders aren't strangers and that most have developed a trusting relationship with their prey before they abuse them.  The Web site address is www.parentsformeganslaw.com.
