CONTROVERSIAL TACK ON SEX ABUSE

Bishop Edward M. Egan, named to replace Cardinal John O'Connor, said that a priest accused of abusing a young man in the 1960's was like an independent contractor, and the church was not liable for the priest's misconduct.  According to Newsday, activists against sex abuse by priests were enraged by the remark and one of them said it was shameful and sinful.
