DEAL IS CLOSE ON LONG-TERM PERV LOCKUP

Governor Pataki and legislators are close to agreeing on new law that could keep dangerous sex offenders locked up in a hospital after their jail terms end.  New York would be one of about 20 states that evaluate sexual predators sentences and confine them to a hospital if they are deemed too dangerous to reenter society.  Civil liberties groups have objected to civil confinement procedures but the U.S. Supreme Court has upheld the practice.
