On June 28, 2005, Robert Johnson, a 61 year old former Newsday publisher, was slapped withfederal child-porn charges that could get him up to 50 years in prison. Johnson, who was also a topstate education official, was indicted on charges that he downloaded two Internet movie filescontaining child pornography and that he tried to destroy those files after learning a federalinvestigation was under way.

On August 4, 2006, Johnson admitted in court that he downloaded the child pornography from a Website and then attempted to cover up the action by trying to delete the pictures. He pleaded guiltyto charges of possession of child pornography and destruction of evidence in connection with thefederal investigation. He faces up to 10 years in prison on the child pornography charge and up to20 years in prison on the destruction of evidence charge. Under recommended federal sentencingguidelines, he would likely be given a sentence of between 27 to 33 months in prison when he issentenced on October 27.

On December 15, Johnson was sentenced to 15 months behind bars.
