A Milford Township man considered a fugitive for allegedly committing sexual assault and assault with intent to do great bodily harm fled authorities when they spotted him outside a South Lyon business Tuesday morning, but was later taken into custody when found hiding inside a trailer park home a few miles away.
The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office said it was shortly before 11 a.m. when detectives with the Fugitive Apprehension Team, who were trying to locate the man, saw him drive a car into the Shell Gas Station at 20777 Pontiac Trail in South Lyon. Detectives attempted to box in his vehicle with theirs, but the man was able to speed away after smashing into two of their cars. A pursuit by detectives was terminated due to poor road conditions, the sheriff’s office said.
The sheriff’s aviation unit and police from Wixom, South Lyon and Novi were called in to help detectives, sheriff’s deputies and a K-9 unit find the man. The sheriff’s office said detectives and deputies from Lyon Township located his car inside the Novi Meadows Mobile Home Community near a residence in the 500 block of Eckschtay Street, where the man was subsequently found inside, hiding, and was taken into custody.
There were no injuries to the man or anyone involved in the apprehension, the sheriff's office said.
The man was lodged in the Oakland County Jail on a 3-count warrant for sexual assault from the South Lyon Police Department, an outstanding felony warrant for assault with the intent to do great bodily harm less than murder from Michigan State Police - West Branch, and a new charge of felonious assault with a motor vehicle for intentionally crashing into the detectives’ vehicles, the sheriff’s office said.
