GIRL PUT IN CELL WITH SUSPECT IN ABUSE CASES

Gerald DeWayne Lewis, a 34 year old man already suspected in three sexual assaults, faces charges of molesting a 16 year old girl who deputies accidentally locked in his jail cell.  Lewis was inside a holding cell at Arapahoe County Jail last week hiding under a bed when the girl was taken there to await a court appearance.  The deputies escorting her thought the cell was empty.  The girl was in the cell for about 40 minutes.  He allegedly fondled the girl over her clothing and she told her attorney what happened.  Lewis has already been charged with sexual assault involving a girl at a Denver church in January, and he is suspected in two other cases a a high school and a middle school.  Arapahoe County Undersheriff Grayson Robinson called it an unfortunate error and an internal investigation is also under way into the two deputies who were staffing the holding cell.  Juveniles will no longer be held there.
