John Mercure, a 22 year old Brooklyn man wanted for raping a woman and attacking another in aspan of a few hours last month, was nabbed September 26, 2003 in Columbus, Ohio by NYPD cops. Hewas wanted for two attacks that included the brutal gunpoint rape of a 17 year old Rhode Islandtourist visiting New York. His crime spree began August 30 when he stole a car and then used it totry and abduct two different women in Brooklyn. He shot at both women and raped the teen twice intwo different locations. The teen identified Mercure after the rape from a mug shot picture.Another woman later came forward to say he also attacked her just an hour before the 17 year oldwas raped. After the attacks, he dumped the car and headed to Columbus, where he had been livingwith a friend.

Mercure was convicted on February 9, 2005 of rape, sodomy and other crimes for sexuallyassaulting the teen. The jury took less than a day to convict him. He faces more than 100 years inprison.
