Humberto Leal Garcia, a 38 year old convicted rapist and murderer of a 16 year old SanAntonio girl, Adria Sauceda, in 1994, was executed by lethal injection at the Texas death chamberin Huntsville.  The Obama administration lawyers had voiced concerns that the executionviolated international law and could undermine the legal rights of Americans traveling or livingabroad.  Garcia was convicted of bludgeoning Adria to death after violating her with a treebranch.  Both forensic evidence and witness statements tied Garcia to the crime.  Instatements to police, he acknowledged fighting with Adria and pushing her to the ground, where hesaid she hit her head.  In the moments before his execution, he confessed to his crimes,adding a final twist to his lengthy legal saga, which had spanned more than 15 years and dozens ofappeals and decisions by courts from San Antonio to The Hague.  Since his arrest, he hadsteadfastly denied raping and murdering Aria.  I am sorry for the victim's family for what Ihad did, he said.  May they forgive me.
