Lauren Redfern, a 26 year old Basalt High School gym teacher, was arrested last week oncharges of sexual assault.  She was caught by the school's athletic director with the studentin the teacher's restroom.  She is charged with two counts of sexual assault on a child by aperson in a position of trust with a pattern of sexual abuse, a class 3 felony.  In Colorado a17 year old can have sexual relations with an adult, but not with a teacher, since teachers hold aposition of trust.   Therefore when the two were caught together in the teacher'sbathroom, no unlawful sex act had been committed because the student was 18, although it didviolate school policies.  The investigation has been primarily focused on her relationshipwith the student before he turned 18.
