CHILTON (WLUK) -- A De Pere man was convicted Tuesday of sexually assaulting his then-girlfriend's teenage son more than 20 years ago.
Gregory Sawyer, 52, pleaded no contest to one count of second-degree sexual assault of a child. Sentencing is scheduled for July 18, court records show.
According to the criminal complaint, the now-37-year-old man talked with police earlier last year about the incidents the fall of 1997 -- although court records indicate an offense date in October 1998. The victim detailed several encounters between the two. Sawyer admitted to several of the incidents, although he offered different version of some events.
While many types of crimes have statutes of limitations within charges must be filed, in Wisconsin, charges for incidents when the minor was under age 16 can be filed until the victim reaches age 45.
Sawyer had been a Green Bay high school teacher but there were no accusations involving any students. He resigned in September, according to the district.
