MANDATE ON BOYS HOME (Following abuse allegations, state calls for correction plan from upstate center for troubled youths)

On July 12, Long Island officials plucked 14 boys from Berkshire Farm Center in Canaan, an upstate center for troubled youths, a day after learning about a state investigation into sexual abuse allegations there.

The state's top child welfare agency, the Office of Children and Family Services, has ordered Berkshire to develop a comprehensive correction plan, including drug testing of staff and better reporting of incidents, to address issues prompted by the abuse complaints at the home.
