MURDER CHARGES FOR SEX OFFENDER IN CASE OF MISSING SISTERS

Lloyd Lee Michael Welch, Jr., a 58 year old imprisoned sex offender, has been charged withfirst-degree murder in the disappearance of two sisters from a suburban Maryland mall in1975.  Twelve year old Sheila Lyon and 10 year old Katherine Lyon walked from their house tothe Wheaton Plaza Mall in March 1975.  They never came home and no bodies were found. After decades of investigating leads and periodically identifying suspects, officials say they nowknow that Welch was responsible.  He is a child sex offender serving a lengthy prison term inDelaware.  He had previously been named a person of interest in the case.  At the time ofthe girls' disappearance, Welch was an 18 year old carnival worker and drifter who had beenspending time in the Wheaton area.  Authorities have established that he was at the mall theday the girls vanished and was seen paying attention to them.  If convicted, he could face 20years to life in prison or could be put to death.
