NEW YORK JUVENILE PRISONS ACCUSED OF ABUSE, NEGLECT
According to a report set to be released today by Human Rights Watch and the American Civil Liberties Union, girls at New York's two facilities for juvenile females are sexually and physically abused by staff and are denied mental health, educational and other rehabilitative services. The conditions at the Lansing Residential Center near Ithaca and the Tryon Girls Center in Johnstown are shrouded in secrecy and girls who suffer abuse have little meaningful redress, according to the report, titled Custody and Control: Conditions of Confinement in New York's Juvenile Prisons for Girls.
