REWRITING THE SEX OFFENDER LANDLORD BILL

According to Legislator Kate Browning (WF-Shirley), a measure that would have required landlords to register with the Department of Probation prior to renting to sex offenders, which had been tabled for over a year at the Suffolk County Legislature, may soon be rewritten as an education program.  Browning's original proposal noted that sex offenders pose an on going and serious threat to public safety after their release from incarceration and that, when large numbers of registered sex offenders are housed together in a community, landlords sometimes reap the financial benefit and then provide no supervision or oversight of their tenants.  According to Browning, continuing problems with the legality of the proposed bill has caused her to rethink the plan.
