‘RUNAWAY’ SEX PERV GETS 1 YEAR

On September 28, the anguished father of an upstate teen runaway said he may have tossed out thefamily computer to protect his daughter from Internet predators, but he never realized the samedangers existed with his home phone. Walter Greig tried in vain to block his 16 year old daughterBreanne from using a raunchy telephone chat room called New York Donut to make contact withunsavory strangers, but she eventually ran away to meet them. Police found Breanne in East Harlemon September 27 with 27 year old Anibal Luciano, who was charged with statutory rape and childendangerment. He was ordered held on $20,000 bail after he was arraigned on the charges and wasordered to stay away from the teenager if he makes bail. Breanne had vanished from her family'sOrange County home on September 17. When Greig called the chat-line numbers he found in hisdaughter's room after she ran away, he was greeted with a recorded disclaimer. The recording toldcallers it's dangerous to give out their addresses and phone numbers, and tells them they have tobe at least 18 to enter a chat room. It also provided links to hard-core sex lines and otherservices that callers have to pay for. He said he might have learned about her calls to Donut's 212numbers if he hadn't switched to an unlimited long-distance phone plan to save money. With theunlimited use plan, all you get is a bill, you don't get the six-page list of calls you used toget, he said.

Calls to Donut and other phone chat lines can be blocked like 900 calls.

How to block chat-line phone calls:

- Even though many phone chat lines don't use 900 numbers, they can be blocked like 900 numbers,by contacting you local phone company.

- Companies that operate networks of chat lines can block your home number at their end.

- Requests for blocks on calls to New York Donut should be e-mailed to info@talkee.com.

Luciano was sentenced to a year in jail for admittedly having sex with the 16 year old girl. Hepleaded guilty to misdemeanor sexual misconduct and has to register as a sex offender. Had heinstead gone to trial, he could have faced up to four years for the original charges of felonystatutory rape.
