We’re hearing a lot of reaction over a Quincy daycare worker now facing child pornography charges. Nathan Caldwell, 21, made his first court appearance on Thursday. Caldwell worked at the daycare at St. Peter Catholic School. He was employed there since 2013 and went to school there as a child. Police took Caldwell into custody at the school on Wednesday on charges of distributing child porn, leaving parents and staff shocked.
“He had nothing to indicate that this was the path that he was going down, if all that is true,” said St. Peter Principal Cindy Venvertloh. Venvertloh said she was shocked when police officers arrived at the school, looking for Caldwell.
“Nathan was here at school,” said Venvertloh. “I called him into the office and two of the officers took him away and he walked out with them. They didn’t have to handcuff him here or anything like that. He just willingly walked out with them.”
In addition to working at the daycare, Venvertloh said Caldwell sometimes served in an assistant role in PE classes. She says he was also a student at Quincy University, pursuing an education degree and taking part in clinicals where students help out at local schools.
“I’m sure he’s been in both catholic schools as well as the public schools too so it’s not specific to St. Peter or to catholic schools,” said Venvertloh. Now Caldwell is behind bars after prosecutors say 169 pornographic images were found on his phone along with 17 pornographic videos. Among those, prosecutors say two photos and a video were of children under the age of 13.
“At this point in time there hasn’t been any child that has been identified,” said Adams County State’s Attorney Gary Farha. “That will be certainly investigated but I don’t want parents that might have had children at the St. Peter’s facility to think that their children were involved.” Farha says the images and video seemed to be downloaded from the internet.
“This was a young man who had not progressed to the point, we believe, to have involved children in this community,” said Farha. Caldwell is set to have his next court appearance November 13. Prosecutors say there could be more charges to come as they sift through the images and videos on his phone.
