Russell Kaufman, a 31 year old registered sex offender, was arrested last week forvolunteering as an assistant coach for a Lancaster youth baseball team.  He also offered hisservices as a private youth baseball trainer around the antelope Valley and Santa Clarita. Kaufman was using different names, such as Russell Thomas, and if he uses different names he mustreport that.  He was arrested May 13 at his home and pleaded not guilty of being a sexoffender who fails to report a name change.  He was being held in lieu of $60,000 bail.
Kaufman was convicted in 1997 of committing a lewd act on a child under age 14 in the SanFernando Valley in 1996.  He was released from parole in June 2004 with no restrictionsrequiring him to stay away from children, but using a false name in an effort to avoid discovery ofsex-offender status is a crime.  He served a little more than 2 1/2 years on the 1997conviction and was returned to prison two other times for parole violations.
