SEX-OFFENDER RAID SPREADS TO NASSAU

Federal immigration officers and Nassau police fanned out across Nassau County yesterday starting at 5 a.m., rousting sex offenders out of their sleep, apprehending others on the streets and arresting some as they showed up for appointments with probation officers.  Twenty-five were rounded up in yesterday's sweep.  They were taken to a federal detention facility.  Agents had also arrested 16 immigrants in Nassau over the past few months.  Yesterday's raids were the third time federal agents and local officers joined forces in Nassau to arrest immigrants who should have begun deportation proceedings after their prison sentences but somehow fell through the cracks.  Laura Ahearn, of Parents for Megan's Law, praised the operation but wondered why it took so long for officials to amend the system's flaws.
