STOLEN BABY IS BACK HOME (Texas officials arrest woman)

Paula Lynn Roach, a 24 year old former state correction officer, is being held on a charge of aggravated kidnapping.  She allegedly abducted 1-month old Nancy Crystal Chavez from a Wal-Mart parking lot, dragging the child's frantic mother across the pavement as she clutched the abductor's car trying to rescue the baby.  The kidnapping was videotaped by a surveillance camera.  The grainy image shows the infants mother, Margarita Chavez, placing her children Nancy, a 2 year old and a 6 years old in a minivan about 4:30 p.m. local time Tuesday.  Chavez stepped about 10 feet away to return a shopping cart, then saw a woman pulling her infant and car seat into another car.  She desperately tried to stop the getaway car, lunging onto the hood and grabbing hold of the vehicle.  Police said she was dragged about 30 to 40 feet.  A man who heard her screams smashed into the passenger side of the fleeing car, possibly breaking the window, but the kidnapper drove away.  Roach was apprehended about 9:30 a.m. yesterday at a traffic stop in the town of Quanah, 125 miles from where Nancy was abducted.  The infant is very healthy and in very good condition, said Abilene police Sgt. Kim Vickers.  Nancy was reunited last night with her parents at the Abilene police station.
