Governor George E. Pataki, saying he hopes to strengthen Megan’s Law, has proposed legislation that would put the names of all sex offenders on the Internet and crack down on those who fail to tell law enforcement authorities where they live.  Currently the state’s online registry lists information only about those offenders who are considered most likely to commit another sex crime.  The law would post onto the site information about sex offenders the state considers at the moderate and low risk level of offending again.  The governor has proposed

Governor Pataki want to include the photos, descriptions and victim patterns of up to 50 times more sex offenders on a state Web site so the public can more readily identify offenders in their neighborhoods.  Another proposal released by Pataki yesterday would provide for the arrest of convicted sex offenders if they fail to report their address to authorities each year, even if they don’t move.  He said the proposals would strengthen the ability of law-enforcement agencies to keep track of sex offenders and provide the information to the public

US District Judge Robert Pratt issued an order blocking enforcement of an Iowa law that prohibits sex offenders from living within 2,000 feet of a school or day care center.  The order came in a federal lawsuit filed by the Iowa Civil Liberties Union last month and expanded Friday to include all people who are subject to the residency restriction.  The lawsuit said the requirement makes it nearly impossible for an offender to find a place to live because there is virtually no place in towns or urban areas in

At a daylong conference at the Hampton Inn Brookhaven, in Farmingville, State Assembly members heard horrid tales of child sexual abuse Friday.  Parents for Megan’s Law, the Stony Brook based organization that monitors compliance with Megan’s Law, coordinated the closed door forum designed to expose and close what the sponsors consider gaping loopholes in Megan’s Law and State Assemb.
