Mayra Estella Lopez's body was found burning in a trash bin in Northglenn on August 26,1992. The 12 year old girl had been raped and strangled. Thirteen months later, anAdams County grand jury indicted 17 year old James Richard Bastin on charges of murder, murderafter deliberation and sexual assault on a child. The arrest of the Horizon High Schooljunior came one year after police had interviewed him, along with dozens of other teenagers fromthe area. After a two-day trial and three days of deliberation, Bastin was found guilty andsentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole.
