NEW JERSEY: MEGAN’S LAW MOM WANTS SEX OFFENDERS ID’d ONLINE
Maureen Kanka, crusader for sex offender notification since the murder of her daughter told APBnews.com she would like to change the New Jersey Constitution so that residents can access the names of all sex offenders in the state. She would like them to be able to access the names through the Internet or a CD-ROM at a local police department. Believing that the least dangerous sex offender could move on to more serious crimes, she feels they also should be added to the notification process. At the present, convicted sex offenders are evaluated as to their potential
danger to the community on a three level scale. Only law enforcement learns about the Level 1 offenders (the least dangerous), once they are released. School, day care centers and groups with children in their care are notified of Level 2 offenders (moderately dangerous). Police go
door to door handing out fliers about Level 3 offenders (highly dangerous).
