PHILLY CHURCH IN SEX ABUSE SCANDAL

A grand jury has found that leaders of the Philadelphia Archdiocese, including two cardinals, concealed sexual abuse by Roman Catholic priests for four decades.  But no criminal charges can be brought against the church or its clergy because of state law limits.  The report, which was three years in the making, names 63 priests whose abusive behavior was well documented in archdiocese files and by witnesses who testified before the grand jury.  It specifically cites the late John Cardinal Krol, archbishop of Philadelphia from 1961 to 1988, and his successor, Anthony Cardinal Bevilacqua, who retied in 2003, for participating in a massive whitewashing.
