A shocking new study shows rapes among city high school kids have spiked dramatically, with a 34% jump in the number of reported incidents.  The study, based on the latest available statistics and released yesterday by the city Health Department, showed that 7.5% of public high school kids surveyed in 2005 said they had been raped, compared to 5.6% in 2001.  The question about forced sex was first asked in 2001, and it includes any childhood rape that teens may have suffered.

An Associated Press review of national statistics found that courts have seen the number of sex-offense cases involving juvenile offenders rise dramatically in recent years.  Some psychologists blame the increase – 40 percent over two decades – on a society saturated with sex and violence and the fact that many of the accused were themselves victims of adult sex predators.

The government reports that military veterans in prison are more than twice as likely to have been convicted for sex offenses than non-veteran inmates.  A study released yesterday by the Bureau of Justice Statistics compared the populations of inmates who served in the military and those who did not.  Veterans are half as likely to be incarcerated than the overall male population in the first place, but 23 percent of the veterans in prison are sex offenders, compared with 9 percent of non-veteran inmates.

Based on a one-year in-depth study, a researcher estimates there are about 240,000 illegal immigrant sex offenders in the United States who have had an average of four victims each.  From January 1999 through April 2006, 1,500 cases were analyzed that included serial rapes, serial murders, sexual homicides and child molestation committed by illegal immigrants.  While the offenders were located in 36 states, most were in states with the highest numbers of illegal immigrants.  California had the most offenders, followed by Texas, Arizona, New Jersey, New York and Florida.  The
