Florida man was sentenced to life in prison after admitting to repeatedly raping an 11-year-old girl—claiming "he felt she was old enough to have sex."
Wilfredo Erazo-Turcios, 29, of Brandenton, was convicted after a jury found him guilty on two counts sexual assault upon a child under 12 years of age, reports the Miami Herald.
The jury's deliberations lasted for roughly one hour and 30 minutes following the two-day trial and after the guilty verdict, lawyers for Erazo-Turcios waived his rights for pre-sentencing investigation.
In addition to the lifetime sentence, Erazo-Turcios was also designated a sexual predator.
"The victim had known the defendant since she was approximately six years old," said Florida State Attorney Ed Brodsky in a statement following the trial. "The defendant lived in the house with the victim and her family since she was 10 years old."
The court heard that abuse started when the girl was at the age of 11 and that between August and December of 2015, Erazo-Turcios molested her roughly a dozen times.
The young girl testified at trial, stating that Erazo-Turcios had threatened to hurt her and kill her family if she ever said to anyone what had occurred.
"The young victim in this case showed great courage in disclosing the defendant's actions and in confronting her abuser at trial," Assistant State Attorney Ashley Dusnik said in an issued statement following the case.
Erazo-Turcios was ultimately his own downfall. He openly talked about his actions with the girl's mother on New Year's Eve 2015 and when the mother confronted her daughter the next day, she confirmed the sexual abuse.
Erazo-Turcios fled after the mother notified police. His white Dodge Caravan was later found in Laredo, Texas.
"Detectives with the Bradenton Police Department made continuing efforts to locate the defendant, however, they discovered that he had left the country and was unable to be apprehended," Brodsky said.
It was disclosed he had travelled to Mexico, then to his native Honduras, before returning to Florida in neighboring Sarasota County. He was arrested on September 13, 2017, after Brandenton Police received a tip.
When he was arrested and questioned, Erazo-Turcios confirmed the rapes.
