MAN SOUGHT IN RAPE ATTEMPT

Nassau police are searching for a man they say entered an unlocked bedroom window of a basement apartment in Hempstead and attempted to sodomize the 10 year old boy he found sleeping there.  Third Squad Detective William Gray said the man apparently had been watching the boy and the house for some time before making his entry on Thursday.  The man had taken off his clothes outside the boy's window and slipped into the room where the boy was sleeping on a blanket between his bed and the window and attempted to sodomize him around 5:45 a.m.  The boy struggled free from underneath the man and ran to his parents room shouting, somebody tried to rape me.  The man quickly slipped out the window and stopped to put his clothes back on.  The boy's stepfather saw the man soon after under some trees in the front of the building and asked him whether he had been in the back of the apartment.  The man said he was stoned and wasn't sure what he was doing.  The boy confirmed that the man was his assailant and the stepfather chased the man a few blocks until he lost sight of him.  The assailant is described as a black man in his 30s, about 5'8 to 6', with a slim build and short black hair.  He was wearing a light blue jogging outfit with a white stripe on the pants and on the back of the jacket.  Anyone with information about the case can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
