MASTIC RESIDENTS PROTEST HIGH-RISK SEX OFFENDER
David Montalvo, 39, a Level 3 sex offender, lives at 24 Lambert Avenue in Mastic, about a half a block from Nannie Day Care, which serves children from 2 months to 12 years old. About 40 protesters gathered at the corner of Montauk Highway and Lambert Avenue last night after learning that Montalvo, a high-risk sex offender, had moved into the home only yards from the licensed day care. Suffolk County's residency restriction law prohibits sex offenders from living within a quarter of a mile from licensed schools, playgrounds, day care centers and other places where children congregate. The protest came as Brookhaven Town is working on a new law that would allow the town to use an electronic mapping system to locate and punish registered sex offenders living in prohibited areas. Such offenders would have up to 14 days to relocate or receive fines of up to $2,500 per week.
