Elvia Gonzalez, sister-in-law of the schools superintendent's wife, was arrested for sex crimes against a male student.
McFarland, CA – A 40-year-old freshman math teacher at McFarland High School was arrested for sex crimes against a male student after the boy showed his cell phone to the principal.
The teacher who has been accused, Elvia Gonzalez, is the sister-in-law of McFarland Unified School District Superintendent Aaron Resendez’s wife, KGET reported.
The school administration first became aware of the incident after the victim showed his cell phone to the high school’s principal on Saturday, KERO reported.
The phone contained inappropriate and incriminating material and the principal referred the matter to the authorities.
"The initial call that came out to us was that there was some kind of content on a phone between the teacher and student," McFarland Police Interim Chief Janet Davis told KNXV. "In terms of what we found is still under investigation."
Gonzalez was arrested at 10:30 p.m. on Oct. 12, the same day the student showed his phone to the school administrator, KGET reported.
The math teacher was charged with sexual intercourse with a minor and contacting a minor to commit certain offenses.
The school district placed Gonzalez on administrative leave after they were made aware of the student’s accusations, KERO reported.
"We believe that it is just one victim, but if anyone else has information or believes that there are other potential victims or anything else we should know give us a call," Chief Davis said, according to KNXV.
The school superintendent called Gonzalez’s arrest “particularly devastating” to him, KGET reported.
Resendez said he has instructed the school district’s attorneys to conduct an independent investigation of the incident because of his relationship with the teacher.
“The well-being of the student victim in this unfortunate situation is concerning and our sympathies go out to him and his family,” he said.
The school has offered counseling to students and staff who request it or for anyone shows signing of emotional distress, KNXV reported.
