A Lachine man awaiting his sentence in a case where he was convicted of child luring was returned behind bars last week following his arrest on charges alleging he accessed child porn last week and last year while he was out on bail.
Martin Barbeau, 43, is currently detained while he faces the charges filed against him at the Montreal courthouse last week. He was charged with possessing and accessing child pornography on Jan. 6.
He is also charged with having communicated with a child for a sexual purpose and and with possessing child porn, on March 1, last year, while Quebec Court Judge Pierre Labelle was deliberating in a case where Barbeau was ultimately convicted of child luring as well as with attempting to extort money from the parents of the girls he tricked into sending nude images of themselves.
He is also charged last week with the illegal sale of cannabis and with having breached the conditions imposed on him, in September 2016, when he was granted bail.
Barbeau appeared before Quebec Court Judge Flavia Longo at the Montreal courthouse on Friday. He was ordered to remain detained until his next appearance on the new charges, scheduled for Jan. 18, which is also the next date scheduled in the sentencing stage of the case before Labelle.
On June 5, Labelle found Barbeau guilty of 23 of the 29 charges he faced following in a Montreal police investigation that began in 2015, after the parents of girls, between the ages of nine and 12, reported they were sent nude images of their daughters. He approached the girls through applications like Instagram, Kik Messenger and Musical.ly. In at least one case, Barbeau demanded between $2,000 and $5,000 from an 11-year-old girl’s parents while threatening to send the images to more people.
In another case, Barbeau sent nude images of a 9-year-old girl to her classmates and her grandparents.
The charges Barbeau faced involved nine girls who lived in Canada, the U.S. and England. When police searched his home a total of 1,087 images considered to be child pornography were found on various electronic devices.
