10-YEAR-OLD INDIAN GIRL HELD BEHIND BARS AFTER TRYING TO REPORT RAPE

A 10-year-old girl who said she was raped was kept behind bars for several hours aftertrying to report the crime.  The incident occurred Monday in the Indian city of Bulandshahr,in the state of Uttar Pradesh.  The girl and her mother approached a women's police station toreport a rape, but the child was promptly put in a cell for several hours.  India has beenconsumed by controversy in the wake of a student's brutal gang rape on a Delhi bus last year. As authorities attempt to quell the public anger over the crime, activists pointed out that a rapeis reported every 21 minutes in India.
