CALIFORNIA:  CITY OFFICIALS PROPOSE PUTTING SEX OFFENDER INFO ON CABLE CHANNEL

Three City Council members proposed broadcasting information on the city's cable channel about the more than 4,000 registered sex offenders living in Los Angeles.  The proposal, to be introduced during Friday's council meeting, seeks to make information from the California Department of Justice's Megan's Law database more readily available to residents.  Megan's Law is a terribly important state law, but it won't do any of us any good if the data stays on a mainframe in Sacramento and doesn't get out into our communities, said Councilman Jack Weiss, who chairs the Information Technology and General Services Committee.  We want to arm our residents, our communities with information, he added.  Weiss and fellow council members Wendy Greuel and Antonio Villaraigosa, a mayoral candidate, are co-sponsoring the motion, which also seeks to post the information on the city's Web site, lacity.org
