California educator, a coach, arrested on suspicion of sending sexual messages to student

A substitute teacher and coach at Jurupa Hills High School in Fontana was arrested after allegations arose of him exchanging sexually explicit text messages with a 17-year-old student, police said Monday, Jan. 31.

Joshua Armstrong, 29, was arrested on Friday, Jan. 28, on suspicion of contacting a minor to commit a sex crime at 8:38 a.m. at the high school.

On Thursday, Jan. 27, police received information that Armstrong was exchanging text messages of a sexual nature with a female student at the high school, the Fontana Police Department said in a news release. The text messages allegedly spanned from September to December of 2021, authorities said.

Armstrong was detained for questioning and he cooperated with the investigation, police said. Authorities then placed Armstrong under arrest, police said.

The Fontana Unified School District identified Armstrong as a resident substitute teacher and assistant football coach at the high school.

“Since the arrest, the employee’s services have not been utilized,” the School District said in a statement. No additional victims have come forward as of Monday, said Officer Jason DeLair, spokesman for the Police Department. No legal counsel for Armstrong could immediately be reached
