DETECTIVE SURRENDERS ON CHILD PORN CHARGES (Illicit Videotapes Found in Suspended Officer’s Home, Cops Say)

Scott Cooper, a 29-year-old Indianapolis narcotics detective, was arrested at about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at a gas station and is free on bond after surrendering to face charges of possession of child pornography.  Cooper called police and told them who he was and where he was and tried to make it very clear that he didn't have a weapon and didn't want to hurt anyone or to get hurt.  He refused to talk to investigators without a lawyer and was released after posting $25,000 bond.  He was suspended without pay on Friday when videotapes in his basement were found by investigators with a search warrant.  The videotapes showed young boys, including one who appeared to be pre-pubescent, showering and performing sex acts on each other.  The videos had been shot in the basement and included one involving an adult penetrating a young boy.

Cooper was not home when the warrant was served and was not found at his part-time job as a security guard at the Melody Skateland rink by police.  He is charged with class A misdemeanors that call for jail terms of no more than a year.  Under Indiana law, someone convicted of a misdemeanor can still serve as a police officer.
