SALT LAKE CITY — A registered sex offender has been charged with attacking a woman who was walking home in Salt Lake City in 2010 and raping her.

Calvin Bodie Garbett, 43, was charged Thursday in 3rd District Court with rape and object rape, first-degree felonies, and forcible sexual abuse, a second-degree felony.

In July 2010, a woman had just walked to a convenience store in downtown Salt Lake City and was returning to her residence when she was grabbed from behind.

Garbett put one arm around the woman’s stomach and the other around her neck, pulled her behind a garbage dumpster and raped her, according to charging documents. He allegedly told her, “Scream and you will get hurt.”

The woman went to a local hospital after the incident where a sexual assault exam was conducted and DNA was collected. Recently, the Utah State Crime Lab found a match in the national DNA database with Garbett.

Garbett is currently on the Utah Sex Offender and Kidnap Registry. He was convicted in federal court in 2006 of using an interstate to transport a minor for the purpose of having sex. He was sentenced to nearly five years in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release.
