A Wichita man has pleaded guilty to a child sex crime after other charges were dismissed following an undercover police investigation into illegal pornography.
Richard Charles Wolfsbauer Jr., 33, entered the plea on Monday in Sedgwick County District Court, records show.
A police detective wrote in an affidavit that the case began in November 2015 as an undercover investigation into internet sharing of child pornography. Investigators linked multiple online files containing videos of children performing sex acts to Wolfsbauer’s computer at his home in the 400 block of North Dodge, near Second and Seneca. A search of the computer turned up more child porn.
Wolfsbauer was charged in August 2016 with four counts of sexual exploitation of a child. Prosecutors alleged that Wolfsbauer promoted sexually explicit performances of the victims — an infant, a toddler, a child under 8 years old and boys under the age of 18.
Three of the four counts were dismissed as part of a plea deal. The remaining count, to which Wolfsbauer pleaded guilty, was amended to attempted sexual exploitation of a child, which carries a less severe penalty.
In court documents, Wolfsbauer wrote that he was a self-employed massage therapist who had worked at a spa in the 300 block of North Seneca.
Under the plea deal, prosecution and defense attorneys will recommend a sentence on the high end of the state’s guidelines. That would be about 26 months in the Kansas Department of Corrections, according to the sentencing grid. Wolfsbauer would also be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
A sentencing hearing has been scheduled for February. He has been out of jail for three years on a $50,000 bond.
