Advocates and school officials charge that the Board of Education’s policies to protect students from sexual abuse aren’t worth the paper they are written on.  In 1994, Schools Special Investigator Edward Stancik and a commission of experts outlined 35 recommendations to prevent sexual abuse in schools, but he says the board has not only failed to implement many of them, but has no means to police the rules it did adopt.  The board insists that it has implemented 32 of the recommendations over the years as the sexual abuse problem

At least one child is sexually abused by a school employee every day in New York City schools and one-third of the employees accused of sexual abuse are repeat offenders who have already been cited for inappropriate behavior by school officials.  A Post investigation found that more than 60 percent of employees accused of sexual abuse, mostly tenured teachers, were transferred to desk jobs at district offices located inside schools.  Forty percent of those transferred suspects were repeat offenders.  A board source said it takes an average of 20 months

Dozens of Colorado sex offenders, ranging from convicted rapists to child molesters, were given $100 and released from prison this week after the state’s high Court ruled they were mistakenly held for parole violations.
