Governor Chet Culver and the local lawmakers agreed on improvements to Iowa’s sex offendermonitoring laws.  The governor called it a tougher, smarter way of dealing with theissue.  The measure establishes a 1-2-3 tier system and overhauls a state law banning sexoffender from living with 2,000 feet of places children gather.  It would instead prohibitoffenders from being in those facilities without prior approval.  Under the new law, only theworst offenders, in tier 3, would still be subject to the 2,000 foot living restrictions. They also would be subject to the Iowa

Last week, The New Jersey State Supreme Court RULED 6-0 against the safety of our childrenand in favor of convicted sex offenders by denying towns the right to restrict where sex offendersmay live.  The Court said towns cannot bar sex offenders from living within a designateddistance of any school, park, playground, public library, or daycare center.

Riverhead officials have gone to court to force Suffolk County to move a trailer for sexoffenders from its current location behind a fence at the Riverhead County Jail, charging that thehousing is illegal because it is less than 1,000 feet from a town park.  But, county officialssay, the park is not really a park at all, just a bit of open space along the Peconic River withtwo benches and a garbage can and they add, the trailer for the homeless men was there first.

In the days before his death, Thomas Pauli, a homeless sex offender in Grand Rapids,Michigan, tried to get a bed at two different shelters, but was turned away.  Both sheltersare within 1,000 feet of Central Catholic High School.  Pauli was prohibited from residing atthe shelters, even for a night.  The shelters near public parks are also prohibited areas forsex offenders.  So, Pauli slept outside, behind a recycling shop.  That’s where hislifeless body was found, crouched on hands and knees in the snow, apparently frozen to death.
