The Rev. James Nyhan, a 60 year old Roman Catholic priest, pleaded guilty to three counts of assault and battery, avoiding a trial that was about to start on charges alleging he sexually abused two boys more than 25 years ago. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison but the sentence was suspended to five years’ probation. The plea came as a jury was being selected for the trial. Bruce Jacques, a 57 year old defrocked priest, pulled the wool over a tony Manhattan school’s eyes, disguising past allegations of sexual abuse, and now faces a fresh set of charges from a 13 year old student. The Vatican defrocked three more Philadelphia priests, bringing the number to 17 since the child-abuse sex scandal broke four years ago. The priests were identified as Edward Avery, Stanley Gana and James McGuire. The statue of limitations prevented them from being criminally charged.
New figures released yesterday by the nations’ Roman Catholic bishops show the unrelenting toll of the clergy sex abuse crisis: 783 new credible claims last year, most of which date back decades, and costs of nearly $467 million. The Diocese of Brooklyn is being rocked by allegations that one of its priests in the 1970s molested two Queens brothers, one of whom became a Catholic priest. Rev. Timothy Lambert accuses Brooklyn Bishop Thomas Daily of covering up for a predator, Rev. Joseph Byrns. Daily is accused of doing the same as a Boston church official for another priest.
