NYS Board of Regents Reviews Plan to ‘Fast Track’ Teaching-License Suspensions Over Sex Abuse Accusations

Teachers accused of sexually abusing students could face “fast-track” license suspensions under a proposed rules change reviewed Monday by the state’s policymaking Board of Regents.

If approved at the Regents next meeting on May 5 in Albany, the new regulations could provide for speedier, temporary removal of accused teachers from their classrooms until all appeals in their cases are settled, state education officials said. However, those accused would be entitled to summary hearings before temporary license suspensions were imposed.

Officials: Suffolk County Police Officer Charged with Child Sex Abuse, Suspended Without Pay

Suffolk County Police Officer Sean Mahony has been with the department for 22 years.

Law enforcement officials confirm Suffolk County Police Officer Sean Mahony has been suspended without pay following his arrest last month.

According to court records, Mahony pleaded not guilty on Monday to two counts of child sex abuse and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

Bay Shore School Board Approves $35 Million Settlement for Alleged Sexual Abuse Victims

The Bay Shore School Board voted unanimously Wednesday evening to approve a $35 million settlement for 12 former students who allege they were sexually abused by retired elementary school teacher Thomas Bernagozzi. The settlements are part of claims made under New York’s Child Victims Act, which allows survivors of childhood sexual abuse to seek justice even if the abuse occurred many years ago.

Bay Shore School District Ordered to Pay $25M in Damages in Sex Abuse Case Against Retired Teacher

A school district on Long Island is being ordered to pay $25 million in damages in a massive school sex abuse scandal.

It stems from accusations against retired teacher Thomas Bernagozzi, 76, who is accused of sexually abusing students for decades.

More than 50 former students now say Bernagozzi abused them more than 20 years ago.

Bernagozzi retired from teaching in 2003. He taught the third grade from 1970 to 2000.

A licensed social worker who works with children has been charged with distributing child pornography, authorities announced Wednesday.

Renee Hoberman, 36, also known as Rina, of Plainview, was arrested Wednesday.

Hoberman worked as a child therapist in Melville and worked professionally with children.

Authorities say Hoberman, posing as a man, posted child porn videos on social media messaging apps from June to October of this year.
