LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – The victim of a shooting in eastern Jefferson County Sunday had a history of sex crimes, WAVE 3 News Troubleshooters have learned.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office released the name of the victim Monday night, and sources told WAVE 3 News he was a registered sex offender.

“I don’t know when they knew he was like that,” his neighbor Elizabeth McReynolds said. “His wife never mentioned it.”

Deputy Coroner Mark Wampler of the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office confirmed the victim’s name was Darrell Buford. His body was discovered inside a home on Symington Circle.

According to Kentucky State Police, Buford’s convictions include five counts of sexual abuse in the first degree and five counts of sodomy. His charges go back to accusations that he sexually abused a child in his own neighborhood. The convictions date back to 2011 when he was sentenced to five years of probation.

The victim was 14 years old according to state records.

According to current records, he was no longer under the supervision of authorities, other than having to register his address.

Sources told WAVE 3 News he most recently worked at Humana and had previously worked for the American Printing House for the Blind.

"He was just quiet," McReynolds said. "He didn't reach out to anybody."

McReynolds said she used to watch her grandchildren at her house until she discovered her neighbor was a sex offender.

“They were like 10 and 7,” she said of her grandchildren’s ages. “I said, well I guess I’ll just watch them at their mother’s house.”

After breaking the news about a homicide investigation Sunday, LMPD later confirmed the victim had been shot. However, the coroner said his cause of death is pending, but it was confirmed a homicide.
Police have not made any arrests in the case.
