SEX-CASE FALLOUT IN OREGON

Neil Goldschmidt, a 63 year old Carter administrator cabinet secretary, admitted to a sexualrelationship with a 14 year old girl in the 1970s when he was mayor of Portland. The affair lasted9 months, which started in 1975 when he was 35 and married. He admitted the affair to the PortlandOregonian after learning the Willamette Week newspaper was going to disclose it. According toOregon laws in 1975, sex with a girl under 16 is rape, but the statute of limitations expired in1979. He said he agreed to a financial settlement with the woman in 1994.

Goldschmidt is surrendering his law license. He informed the Oregon State Bar Association of hisdecision in a sworn statement dated Wednesday. The bar announced the resignation Friday.
