A 12 year old girl was attacked and nearly raped by and 11 year old boy inside their Astoria middle school. The girl was attacked in a stairwell at IS 126 on Monday just after she left her third period class. He pulled down her pants and underwear and then pulled his down, but she was able to escape before he could rape her. The boy turned himself in later that day and is charged with attempted rape.

According to a Washington Post survey, the Catholic Church has removed 218 priests from their positions this year because of child sex-abuse allegations, but at least 34 known offenders remain in church jobs. Since the early 1960s, at least 850 US priests have been accused of sexual misconduct with minor and more than 350 of them were removed from the ministry before this year.

Marc Collins-Rector, Chad Shackley and Brock Pierce, the disgraced co-founders of Digital Entertainment Network (DEN.net), have been arrested in the Spanish resort town of Marbella. Collins-Rector was indicted in August 2000 by the US District Attorney in Newark on five counts of transporting a minor across state lines for the purposed of engaging in sex. Shackley and Pierce were arrested when a warrant on Collins-Rector was served. The arrest charges relate to child pornography found where the two were living. The Supreme Court ruled Monday that states can limit privileges of sex offenders who won’t admit to crimes as part of therapy. The 5-4 ruling could spawn similar efforts in other states. Inmates, who want to keep their privileges, may be forced into therapy and be required to admit past wrongdoing that could be use in future prosecutions. Bishop William Murphy said there were no excuses or justifications for sexual abuse by priests, but that the so-called American sexual revolution with all its permissiveness has certainly been a factor. However, he emphasized that the sinfulness of the human condition can at times overwhelm the best efforts and the total commitment of even all of us striving together.
A search of newspaper databases around the country produced more than 50 cases of community or school coaches who have been charged with or convicted of sexually abusing more than 100 of their young athletes in the last few years. Experts say that’s probably jut the tip of a larger problem. Shrouded in silence and cover-up, sexual abuse of young athletes is hard to stop and hard to prove. Predators are difficult to catch.
