Norman Byler, 67, was accused of assaulting girls aged 3, 5, and 8 after neighbors stated they saw one of the girls bleeding. Byler was charged on December 27, 2000. Byler’s daughter, Katie Yoder and son-in-law, Tobie were already aware of the situation and had sought mental health treatment for him. Yoder stated that Byler was responding to the medication. Yoder does not want Byler in jail, stating that …it won’t do him any good.

Since August 1, six teens have reported being groped by an assailant who sneaks up on young girls and grabs their breasts before running away. Four incidences occurred in Leonia and two in Palisades Park. In one of the Palisades Park incidents, the assailant tried to force the girl to the ground but she broke free and ran for help. The assailant is described as a dark-skinned man, between 5-foot-5 and 5-foot-7, with short, dark hair and a muscular build. In two of the incidents, he spoke in Spanish.

A kidnapped Bronx girl was forced to live on almost nothing but water and cookied for nearly a year while being held in a boiler room and basement bedrom in her apartment building. Carmin Ezzo, a 45 year old disabled man from Passaic County, pleaded guilty in municipal court to charges of trespassing and creating a hazardous situation a May 15th incident. As part of the plea bargain, prosecutors agreed to drop a lewdness charge. Ezzo was fined $900, placed on two years’ probation, and ordered to undergo drug and alcohol counseling. Hugh Leppo, a 44 year old assistant principal at a Brooklyn school, was arrested two weeks afterexposing himself to three 16 year old boys.
